Five centuries of open mining amethyst for jewelry and ornamentation have made the fame of the East Livradois territories and more specifically of the town of le Vernet-la-Varenne. These most beautiful amethyst crystals are used to ornament rings, necklaces and tiaras since the 16th century. In the 20th century the pruple veined stones are hewn and set into ink pots, penholders, paperweights, or umbrella sticks at “La Taillerie de Royat” …

 

La maison de l’Améthyste will tell you the story of this famous purple mineral throughout the centuries in Auvergne. The commented exhibition will explain the nature, the composition and the formation of the amethyst, as well as its exploitation for five centuries and what it was – and is - is used for.

People can also join several activities, such as the “Comme to the mine”, "The treasure of the rivers"and "Walk with the Professeur Cayoux" on the field, or, at the castle, "The tree of cristals", Make your own cristals" and  “Choose and polish your stone”.
